Sophie's Food Project

We came across Sophie's Food Project by chance and fell in love with how it made us feel. More than just fun animations, they felt like a visualisation of the odd thoughts that cross our minds while eating certain foods, the lingering sensations in our throats, and the shifting shapes of food as it cooks.

For this project I made gifs and animation for three articles looking at food science. I was interested in pushing and distorting the ideas mentioned in the articles whilst clearly representing the text. The tone of the work is playful and fun as a way of reflecting the comfort and joy food can bring. I also wanted to show the tactile sensations associated with eating and cooking through the way the gifs move, the textures and shapes of the motifs and more.

The animation is about smart pasta—flattened pieces with imprinted grooves that transform into funky shapes when boiled. Its flat design reduces packaging while still catering to the shape preferences of pasta lovers.

This animation is about tree shrews and how they have adapted to enjoying hot chillies without experiencing any negative effects—unlike most mammals and birds, which are sensitive to spiciness.

The animation is about why blueberries are blue, considering that blue is a rare colour in nature. While other blue organisms, such as butterflies and frogs, use the colour to deter predators, blueberries owe their hue to a different phenomenon. Unlike many fruits that derive their colour from internal pigments, blueberries appear blue due to the way light interacts with their outer layer.
